Gam’s Sloppy Joes get their great flavor from a can of Campbell’s Condensed Chicken Gumbo Soup that’s mixed with ground beef, onion, ketchup and mustard. Best served on a bun with a layer of potato chips!
Gam’s Sloppy Joes shown here just the way my family enjoys them, with a layer of Minnesota-made Old Dutch Potato Chips.
Sloppy Joes are one of our family’s favorite go-to weeknight suppers, and our favorite recipe comes from my husband’s grandma who we called “Gam.”
This recipe is so easy and includes an unexpected ingredient: a can of Campbell’s Condensed Chicken Gumbo Soup, which includes tiny (almost undetectable) pieces of chicken meat, rice and veggies. I think it’s the soup’s savory broth that gives these sloppies a bit of extra pizzaz.
It’s no surprise that Gam liked this recipe. She was quite the character, full of pizzazz herself, with a somewhat devilish sense of humor. I can just picture her getting a giggle when she’d reveal the secret ingredient that makes these Sloppy Joes so great.
One of my all-time favorite pictures of sweet Gam and Pop! I love her old bike which I am the proud owner of today.
Gam’s handwritten recipe, complete with her tip, “be sure to use buns-also, good over mashed potatoes.”
