A Season with Reason(s) to Celebrate

Sarah

Spring Is FINALLY Here. Cue the Confetti (and cake)!

It’s so nice to see green grass again (or grass at all!), the trees budding and tulips popping that it’s surely a reason to celebrate! What more perfect way to mark the return of spring than with a pretty dessert like the Vintage Rainbow Layer Cake (pictured above)? I just love the pastel colors of cherry and pistachio whipped cream frosting, not to mention these two flavors in combination with the chocolate layers. This is an old recipe from one of my mom’s cookbooks she got for her wedding shower more than 55 years ago, but I tweaked it a bit and also added a gluten-free version. Let’s Hear It for the Moms

Mother’s Day is just a week away! I hope you have the opportunity to celebrate or honor the moms in your life and/or that you are showered with love and attention from your kids. It’s also a good time to connect with our mothers about family recipes or make a special dish in their memory. So often, it’s our mothers and grandmothers who are the ones who are the keepers of our family’s cherished dishes and food traditions. If you are looking for a fun and meaningful gift idea, how about asking your mom for the recipe for one of your family’s favorite dishes and setting aside time to make it together? Or, you could give her a set of cute recipe cards and ask her to write down/share some recipes that you can both make together throughout the year.

The Other May Holiday

Last but not least, there is another very important “holiday” or annual tradition that happens in Minnesota and always seems to coincide with Mother’s Day weekend: Fishing Opener! I hope you will take the time to read about my family’s love of fishing (below) and a few of our family recipes for frying fish.
