I am still thinking about my Aunt Jeannie’s lasagn

I am still thinking about my Aunt Jeannie’s lasagna from last week when I was up north. ❤️ And I think I am still FULL!

Jeannie’s legendary lasagna parties started back in the 1970s with co-workers from the Red Owl in Bemidji. More than 50 years later, the tradition is still going strong and I was lucky enough to have a seat at the table last week!

I shared Jeannie’s recipe and the story behind these parties on my website a while back, and I love how this beloved lasagna has become the heart of so many years of friendship, laughter and memories around the table.

I’ll share a link to Jeannie’s recipe in my stories, where you can also read “the tell” behind this dish—including why lasagna is so perfect for a get-together and Jeannie’s make-ahead tips and party pointers for a fun, low-stress gathering. Hint: it may involve wine!

Had such a lovely time up north for a busy schedule of “Dish & Tell” book events. Excited that my sweet little florals in my special teacups survived the roadtrip and still look as cute as ever.

Making my way through NW Minnesota to “dish & tell” at a number of @lakeagassiz locations! ❤️

So far, I’ve had the chance to visit Moorhead, Hendrum and Crookston. And today, I’m headed to Barnesville for a 2 p.m. event!

It has been so fun to visit each community and hear about the recipes they hold dear, talk about our shared love of pretty dishes and reminisce about beloved food traditions. I’m collecting so many great stories—and even a few new recipes—along the way! Yesterday, I especially loved that long after one of my events had officially ended, several women stayed afterward to keep “dishing” about their family recipes and food memories. That might just be my favorite part of all of this.💕

And yes, I bring a little bit of home with me wherever I go: my grandmas’ china tea cups, vintage recipe boxes and handwritten recipe cards, family photos, doilies and all! 😊

Next stop: Barnesville! Hope to see a few of you there today!

Thanks to Gina and Four Pines Bookstore for hosting a little Dish & Tell in Bemidji!

I love any opportunity to talk about my love for cherished family recipes and, even more, to hear about the special dishes and food memories that others hold dear. I especially loved hearing about Gina’s family recipe for Fudge Pies. (And, I am happy to report I walked away with the recipe 😉)

It means a lot to me to have Dish & Tell on the shelves in Bemidji, as so many of the recipes and stories in the book have family connections to the area. I can’t help but wonder what my Grandma Hilma, Aunt Ede and Aunt Edna would think! ❤️

Wrapping up a fun weekend where I got to visit with family, drive by some familiar places I visited frequently throughout my childhood, say hello to Paul and Babe and have a lovely book event and recipe swap @fourpinesbookstore!

Sharing a list of my fall book events!

Tomorrow, I will be at Four Pines Bookstore in Bemidji at 3 p.m. and I couldn’t be more excited. Bemidji is a place dear to my heart!💕

Saturday’s event will include a book talk and recipe swap. I’ll share some of the stories behind the book and a few samples, and attendees are invited to bring a favorite handwritten recipe to swap with someone else—so everyone has a chance to go home with a new recipe for their own recipe box.

From Bemidji, I will travel to Moorhead to kick off a series of events I am doing with the Lake Agassiz Regional Library this fall.

At each stop, we’ll talk about how recipes connect us across generations and I will share some of my favorite stories from the book (as well as a sample treat or two from the book). Attendees are encouraged to bring along their recipe box, a favorite handwritten recipe card or a family cookbook to share with the group so we can “dish & tell” together!

I am also looking forward to a book signing at The Bookstore at Fitgers on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 12 to 2 p.m. Find more details here.

Fall is such a fun and festive time to get out and about, and I’m especially looking forward to hearing what others are cooking, baking and pulling from their recipe boxes during these cozy months!😘

Beep beep! Hitting the road for some fun book events this fall!

First stop: Bemidji, a place near and dear to my heart. I’ve spent so many holidays, summer vacations and family trips here visiting my mom’s side of the family—including my aunt and cousins who still live there today and who I can’t wait to see!

Fun fact: These pictures are from the little amusement park that used to be on the lake near the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues. YES, I AM THAT OLD. 😂

I have so many wonderful memories of our visits to Bemidji and, not surprisingly, many of them involve the meals we shared and the food we ate. ❤️ Some of those memories and family recipes even found their way into “Dish and Tell: Recipes from the Heart.”

I’ll be sharing a few of those stories when I visit @fourpinesbookstore this Saturday at 3 p.m.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much I want to encourage people to actually WRITE DOWN their favorite recipes!

As convenient as it is to pull up a recipe on your phone or computer (and I certainly do it too!), there’s just something special about cooking from a recipe card.💕

And think about it: All of those old, stained and well-loved recipe cards we treasure today didn’t start out as family heirlooms. They were simply recipes someone took the time to write down and then made over and over again.

Along the way, maybe they got a little splattered. Someone crossed out an ingredient or scribbled a note in the margin. The handwriting started to fade and the edges got a little worn. And before anyone realized it, that ordinary little recipe card became something worth saving. ❤️

So consider this my little nudge to pick one of your go-to recipes and write it down! Cook from the card. Make notes on it. Get it a little messy. And then tuck it away in a recipe box.

Who knows? Today’s recipe card might just be something someone treasures years from now.
