Baking cookies can’t solve the world’s problems, but it also can’t hurt, right?

I shared the recipe for these beautiful bon bon cookies (from a vintage Betty Crocker cookbook) in October of 2019, when I wrote, “These colorful, little cookies turned out to be just the delightful, frivolous distraction I needed during a particularly drab week here in Minnesota. When the weather is crap, and the news is too much to stomach, there’s no place I’d rather be than in the comfort of my cozy kitchen baking up some sweet treats.”

I honestly don’t remember what was happening in the world that week that was so dismal, but the sentiment rings true right now. I guess I know what I will be baking this weekend! BTW, You can find this recipe on my website.😘

These are Grandma Helen’s Cinnamon Coffee Cake Rolls from my upcoming cookbook “Dish and Tell: Recipes from the Heart” (just a few weeks away!).
I loved learning about this recipe from my friend Shannon and hearing how she visited her grandma a few years back so they could make the rolls together—capturing Grandma Helen’s special tips and tricks along the way.

Passed down through generations, so many cherished family recipes were never written down but learned through time spent in the kitchen together. I still think about Grandma Helen’s tip to “sugar” the counter instead of using flour—a small but magical detail that makes these rolls extra special.

I’m still completely blown away by the love for my KitchenAid mixer, Beatrice. After I shared a simple dime trick to give her a little fine-tuning, the reel took off — 3.3 million views and counting.🤪

But the very best part? Learning how many of you have named your mixers too. Some of my favorites so far: Mixie Elliott, 20-Quart Ethel, and Sir Mix-A-Lot, Mix Sterling…

I named Beatrice because she was a big investment for me, has a permanent place on my counter, and has been the backdrop for so many special moments baking and cooking with people I love. She truly feels like part of the family.💕

(Fun fact: Beatrice means “she who brings happiness,” which feels just right.)

This super simple recipe was tucked inside one of my vintage recipe boxes and instantly reminded me of Sunday afternoon visits at my grandma’s house, when there was always some kind of dessert waiting and usually scooped straight from a 9×13 pan.

Like so many great dessert recipes of yesteryear, this one uses only a few ingredients and ones you are likely to have on hand: fruit pie filling, a cake mix, and BUTTER. Optional: top with some nuts!

We made it last night with cherry pie filling and a gluten-free yellow cake mix, and today we’ll be enjoying it the very best way — on a slow Sunday afternoon (maybe while watching the Vikes!), served warm on my grandma’s dishes, with a little whipped cream on top. 🍒
