It’s been a month since my vintage fridgescape e

It’s been a month since my vintage fridgescape escapade! Yes, it was meant to be temporary, a fun little “experiment” (and gave me a good excuse to clean my fridge) but three things I am keeping around:

🩷Pretty food storage! I am vowing to ditch all the ugly plastic food storage containers I have (unless they are cute Tupperware!) and plan to use refrigerator glass when possible. I pick up glass containers with lids whenever I see them at thrift shops or estate sales. In addition to using them in the refrigerator, I use them as drawer organizers.

💐 Fridge flowers! No surprise, flowers last a very long time in the refrigerator! Placing bud vases here and there is such a fun touch. Also, I have a tiny bud vase with a suction cup that I placed right above our filtered water dispenser. So cute and makes me smile every time I fill my water glass.

🤪Lazy Susans! Are these the most brilliant storage hack ever?! I love the one I found at Target that looks like refrigerator glass and helps to corral all my pickle-y things! I bought another one to use in my cupboard for my baking spices.

I’ve been tardy to the pumpkin party this fall but am making strides as I try out some new (and old!) pumpkin bread recipes for my cookbook this week. I am so excited about one in particular from a family who shared their cherished recipe with an unexpected ingredient I have never had in pumpkin bread but is AH-MAZING 😉.

You will have to wait a bit longer for that recipe and story, but in the meantime, I will share my mom’s recipe for the yummy brown sugar glaze she uses to top her pumpkin bread. THIS. GLAZE. My goodness, it’s so good and adds a nice little bit of pizzazz to your pumpkin bread that you never knew you needed in your life but you do. You really do.

Brown Sugar Glaze

Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup whipping cream
2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
— Combine the butter, sugars and cream in a saucepan. Cook until sugar is dissolved.
—Cool for 20 minutes. Stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled loaves.

These apple bars are a fall favorite at my house and happen to be the most popular recipe on my website—for good reason. It’s a tried-and-true recipe from my cousin-in-law Becci (@nilgirl) and her mom. They’ve been making these bars for years! I like these bars even better than apple pie; in part, because of the glorious glaze on the top and also, because…um they are BARS!

I have been known to cut corners and use a prepared pie crust at times. And lately, I have been making a gluten-free crust that is so good and flaky! I use a recipe from @nickisizemore and her blog “From Scratch Fast.” Best with a side of salted caramel ice cream.😋

My heart for handwritten recipe cards just grew 10 sizes today as I am going through my mom’s “backstock” of family favorite recipes. She keeps a smaller vessel of cherished recipes on her countertop, but this trusty Rubbermaid container holds so many of the dishes near and dear to my heart. Many of these are on my blog but there is something special about having the worn-out, stained recipe cards with the handwriting of my mom, my Aunt Ede, my grandmothers, neighbors and family friends that is just so special. I may make a little collage and frame them to hang in the kitchen? What do you think? Anyone done this? Do you use handwritten recipes?

Greetings from my vintage kitchen! Some highlights from my “settling into fall” weekend:

🍁Taylor Swift’s Chai Sugar Cookies make me so happy and are on my fall bucket list each year. I use the recipe from @joythebaker and they are perfection! I also made a gluten-free version using King Arthur Measure for Measure GF flour and they turned out great.

🐕 Took a quick trip up north to check out the fall foilage and happened upon a fun Oktoberfest celebration in Sandstone where Dolly the Doodle was very popular.

🏈 Made my first-ever crockpot breakfast casserole in preparation for the early morning Vikings game. I was nervous about cooking something overnight (hello…cue the tragic This Is Us episode that forever haunts me) but it all worked out! It was a tasty recipe…I’ll admit I like crispier hashbrowns than are probably possible in a crockpot situation, but I would do this again if the right occasion called for an early morning, roll out of bed in your PJs and turn on the TV kind of breakfast. Best served with a splash of hot sauce and a spicy Bloody Mary. And hurray the Vikes won!!!

🐓 Last but not least, it’s a bird on a Bundt. I love to slow-roast some meat on Sundays…I was inspired by a recipe in @amyrosethielen’s latest cookbook called Company where she stood her bird on a Bundt pan and roasted it in on the grill. I use my oven but the Bundt pan works swell to hold the bird up so it gets nicely browned in all the right places AND it serves as a moat to catch all the delicious juices to make a great sauce for basting the meat and pouring over the cut-up pieces when serving. YUM!
