I’ve lost my top taste-tester, my #1 fan and the

I’ve lost my top taste-tester, my #1 fan and the one who has inspired me in so many aspects of my life. My dad passed away last Tuesday after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. It was a very challenging past few years, but this period gave me the unexpected gift of time with my mom and dad. And for that, I will be forever grateful.

I’ll miss our frequent car rides to/from doctor visits when we’d stop to dine at our favorite Duluth restaurants. I’ll miss having a reason to bake in abundance for someone who appreciated every last morsel of a sweet treat. I will miss all of the home-cooked meals we enjoyed together the past three years—often just the three of us—around my parents’ dining room table.

Some of my favorite food memories tied to my dad are:
—He started every single day with a bowl of Cheerios topped with bananas and so much sugar that he earned the name of “hummingbird” from a dear friend and fishing buddy.
—Cinnamon rolls and coffee cake were a favorite treat and my mom would lovingly heat them in their toaster oven for him to enjoy at breakfast or with morning coffee.
—My dad loved Coca-Cola more than anyone I know. In my younger years, there was always a 2-liter in the fridge which we weren’t allowed to touch as it was just for him. When we’d dine out, if a restaurant had didn’t have Coke products, there’d be a big sigh of disappointment. One funny moment was once when a waitress asked, “Is Pepsi OK?” My dad quickly shot back, “Is Monopoly money OK?”
—Every year my dad would pick fresh strawberries, and I think his favorite voyages to the berry farm were when his grandchildren would join him. I know he treasured that time together and also eagerly anticipated the homemade strawberry pie that my mom would make him.
—Chocolate cake! He loved the chocolate cake which we made for every family birthday including his 80th birthday the day before he passed.
—And last, I will always treasure the Sunday dinners and holiday meals when our family gathered and my dad would sit at the head of the table. He didn’t say much during those meals except his favorite word, “wow!”

I am doing some recipe testing for my cookbook today and was tickled to learn that my friend Sarah’s family bakes their cherished pumpkin bread in the can from the pumpkin. My mom used to do this at the holidays when she would gift her various breads to others. Makes for a pretty loaf that’s even more adorable when sliced! 😍

Attended a celebration of a dear friend’s mom where guests were asked to dress like Martha Stewart, her mom’s favorite hostess. Martha and her bestie Snoop Dog flew in from Paris to serve tea sandwiches.

Such a beautiful and fitting tribute to a great woman with a gorgeous spread that I’m sure both Marilyn and Martha would be proud of! 🩷

Bad: I am STILL having to prop my oven door closed with a chair to keep the heat inside. Love my @lacornueofficial oven but it’s really frustrating to have to wait for more than 4 months for parts!! Anyone know a good repair person who can fix a seal and gasket situation?!

I am packaging up a few treats to bring to my college kiddo today and couldn’t resist creating a spooky version of the classic Aunt Sally (aka Sally Ann) cookies.🧡🖤🧡

Happy Halloween Eve! Of course the temp is dropping drastically and snow is in the forecast for tomorrow here. If you need a warm, cozy meal to have at the ready before heading out for trick or treating, check out this pizza hotdish recipe from my friend Maria’s mother’s vintage recipe box! 🧡🧡🧡We’ve made this dish a few times now and I love how it combines two of my favorites dishes into one. Plus, it’s great for leftovers. Definitely going to be enjoying this with some 🍷as we await all the little ghouls and goblins in our neighborhood! 👻
