Are you making any festive treats?🇺🇸
Throwing it back to this 80’s family-favorite reci Throwing it back to this 80’s family-favorite recipe that lives on a stained recipe card in my mom’s recipe box. 🩵 I shared the “dish & tell” for Kay’s taco salad on my Substack recently. You can find it via the link in my bio. All the ingredients of a taco salad with DORITOS mixed in, this would be a great party salad for Fourth of July!🇺🇸

What’s the one dish that brings the fireworks to your holiday table?
Some recipes are legendary long before they hit th Some recipes are legendary long before they hit the potluck table.

That’s exactly what happened with Staci’s mother-in-law Marie’s dill pickle pasta salad. Family members would get excited as soon as they heard she was bringing it to the July 4th potluck! Packed with sharp cheddar, fresh dill, crunchy pickles…and Marie’s secret: soaking the pasta overnight (up to 12 hours!) in pickle juice for that punchy pickle flavor.

When Staci first told me about her family’s love for this pasta salad and how she also makes this treasured family dish, I knew it was the perfect “recipe from the heart” to include in “Dish & Tell.” I’m so grateful to Staci and Marie for sharing this family favorite and the story behind it. 💚

If you’re looking for a true potluck pleaser this holiday weekend, I hope you’ll give Marie’s version of dill pickle pasta salad a try and let me know what you think. Of have you made it yet? I have a feeling Marie would be tickled “green” to know so many people are enjoying her recipe.😘
Double desserts for the birthday girl!! 🥳 We got Double desserts for the birthday girl!! 🥳

We got to celebrate Lucy’s 24th birthday last night with the “one and only chocolate cake” that my mom is known for and has been part of our family birthdays for decades. It’s a rich chocolate cake that is oh soooooo chocolatey due to cup of hot coffee in the batter (which intensifies the flavor) and the most luxurious chocolate buttercream frosting.😋 I love that Lucy loves this cake so much and requests it each year! 💕

We always say, “it wouldn’t be a birthday without this cake,” so when I learned Bonny’s family says the same thing about her banana split ice cream cake…well I just HAD to make this special dessert too!

I shared Bonny’s “dish & tell” story and recipe on my Substack last week (link in bio). This would be such a fun dessert for summer celebrations!

The chocolate cake recipe is in my cookbook! 😘
One of my favorite finds from my visit to @bonnies One of my favorite finds from my visit to @bonnieslotnickcookbooks this past spring was this sweet Betty Crocker pamphlet from 1969, “Cakes Kids Love.” So many fun ideas, but one in particular caught my eye!

I’m pretty sure the Raggedy Ann doll cake is the one my mom made for my first birthday in 1972. She would often tell the tragic tale of her painstaking efforts to create this cake and how how cute it turned out. But when the photos were finally developed (remember those days?), none of them turned out...😳

Even though I don’t have photographic evidence of the birthday cake, at least I have this pamphlet. Thanks Bonnie! 😉And, of course, I will attempt to recreate this adorable cake for my next birthday.❤️

Did your mom ever make a fun cake for your birthday? Do you have pictures?!
In “Dish and Tell: Recipes from the Heart,” I talk In “Dish and Tell: Recipes from the Heart,” I talk about how the term salad has a very loose interpretation when it comes to Minnesota potlucks! 🤪 I personally love myself a Snickers salad, FLUFF, all kinds of pasta salad (dill pickle!) or Jell-O salad but there is one salad in particular that makes a frequent appearance at get-togethers in these parts and actually has some true salad ingredients: crunchy coleslaw!

Have you had this quintessential potluck salad with ramen noodles and a dressing of olive oil, vinegar, soy sauce, sugar and the ramen seasoning packets? Sometimes it has sunflower seeds mixed in, sometimes toasted nuts…

Julie’s version, in my cookbook, includes toasting the ramen noodles in a skillet along with some sliced almonds before tossing together the rest of the ingredients. So good!

What is your favorite Minnesota potluck “salad?“
Have you ever noticed that sometimes it’s the simp Have you ever noticed that sometimes it’s the simplest recipes that make for the most flavorful dishes?! My Aunt Jeannie made this cucumber salad this past weekend at the lake and shared her recipe (in her handwriting)! 🩵 It hits the spot for a refreshing, tasty and lighter salad and uses only a few ingredients. It would be so perfect for all your summer potlucks! Jeannie said she’ll make a big bowl and it lasts for days in the fridge. I love the tangy dressing that had us all drinking it from our salad bowls!😋
FUN weekend up north! Book event + family time + l FUN weekend up north! Book event + family time + lake time = one very happy heart.🩷

So grateful to @beagleandwolf for inviting me to be part of the 3rd Street Festival!
