Decorating sugar cookies is always at the top of our family’s holiday checklist. It’s one of my favorite traditions from my childhood, sitting around the dining room table with my brothers and having finger-licking access to all the colored frostings and sprinkles!

It’s a tradition I have continued with my own kids and am proud to say, it’s one they still enjoy when they are home for the holidays. To be honest, I haven’t always made the cookies from scratch as my mom did. Sometimes we’d buy the refrigerated dough and packaged frosting to cut steps and get us closer to the real fun of decorating and eating the cookies. However, these days I look forward to making these sugar cookie cut-out cookies from start to finish, using my mom’s recipe for the pretty glaze to top them with.

This recipe calls for chilling the dough for at least an hour before you roll it out, but that can be a good time to prepare the frosting and gather all your sprinkles and colored sugars.

Then, let the finger licking begin!
