A chocolatey, nuttier version of plain old chocolate chip cookies with some finely ground rolled oats along with cut-up Hershey bar pieces in addition to a whole bag of chocolate chips.
For years, I’ve had this recipe for “Ede’s $250 cookies” which are a more chocolatey, nuttier version of plain old chocolate chip cookies with some finely ground rolled oats along with cut-up Hershey bar pieces in addition to a whole bag of chocolate chips. As kids these days would say, this recipe seems a little “extra.”
Ede is my mom’s late aunt and if you follow this blog , you know she was an extraordinary cook and has been a huge influence on so many of our family’s favorite dishes and treats! So it’s no surprise that Ede had an awesome recipe for next-level chocolate chip cookies, but I was a little skeptical about what made them “$250 cookies.”
Since my mom didn’t know the full story either, I did a little research to find out how this cookie got its name.
The Revenge Cookie
Apparently, there’s a myth behind this cookie about a woman who dined at a Neiman Marcus cafe years ago. She loved the chocolate chip cookies so much she asked the waitress for the recipe. The waitress said she could share the recipe for “two-fifty.” When the woman got her credit card bill, she was shocked the recipe cost her $250! Next, when she found out she couldn’t get a refund, the woman decided to get her revenge by sharing the expensive recipe (for free) with all her friends and eventually the world. Or at least that’s how the story went until the New York Times did its own investigative reporting in 1997 (“The $250 Cookie Recipe Exposed”) and found the story was not true after all.
In the end, I guess we may never know the truth and you could say that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. But what really matters is that this is a great cookie recipe.
