Cookie Time!

Sarah

A tip and a twist on a classic holiday cookie.

I am in full-on cookie-baking mode. I aim to use up all of the butter, sugar and flour in the house today to see how many varieties of cookies I can check off my list. Where to start?

Russian Tea Cakes are usually among the first cookies to kick off my holiday baking and for good reason: 1) the recipe includes ingredients I am likely to have on hand and 2) it is a cherished family recipe—the best kind as it has been made over and over and over with tried and true results!

I have my friend Becky to thank for bringing Russian Tea Cakes back into my life. It had been a while since I had them as a kid when I remember a neighbor making them, calling them snowballs. A few years ago, I talked to Becky for my blog and she graciously shared her family’s recipe along with sweet memories of her late mom, a talented baker who loved the holidays and all the baking that comes with the season. You can read the post here and get their family recipe.

Becky, who is also a passionate baker and continues to draw inspiration from her mother, shares a tasty tip for making Russian Tea Cakes as well as a twist on these classic cookies called Diablo Snowballs that earned her accolades in the Star Tribune’s Holiday Cookie Contest in 2021.

In fact, I just picked up “The Ultimate Minnesota Cookie Book” featuring several of the winners from the annual cookie competition, and Becky’s recipe is featured on page 57! Tip: this book would be a great gift if you have a baker in your life or if you know someone who loves cookies and honestly, isn’t that everyone you know?!

Happy cookie season!
